skandar review
skandar and the unicorn thief is the perfect book for those looking for something like harry potter and percy jackson. (although not as good as percy jackson, i do think it’s a worth while read).
this book follows young skandar smith as he becomes a unicorn rider. it’s something he’s wanted for as long as he could remember. skandar and the unicorn thief is your typical chosen one story.
i loved the darker vibe these unicorns give off. they aren’t sparkling horses. they don’t fart rainbows (or whatever it is that unicorns supposedly do). instead they’re terrifying beasts that are bonded to a human rider. i found this concept very unique and clever.
while i enjoyed this book, i don’t see why people don’t just read percy jackson and harry potter. this book was a nice blend between the two, but it didn’t add anything new to the market. i think it’d be the perfect adventure for middle graders to immerse themselves into if they didn’t want to read “older” books.

I want to be a Unicorn Rider too. What a fun premise!
right? it sounds so fun!!
AHHH UNICORNS??? SIMILAR TO PJO AND HARRY POTTER??? AND DARKER UNICORNS THAT TOO?? I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! Loved your review💖💖💖
YES and YES!!
I love that cover! For some reason, I like it more than the US edition – this really throws me back to some of the books I read a decade ago (most of which have now been rebranded). I also saw this the other day while shopping and the darker vibe of the unicorns DEFINITELY had me interested in buying it (though I ultimately decided not to).
it’s definitely worth the read! i adored it. although if you’re worried about the cost, it should be at a library (if you have access to one near you) as it seems fairly popular.
