i hate it when i love a book so much that i don’t know how to review it. what’s critical thinking when all my thoughts are “oh my god”? this book is definitely my new favourite.
this savage song is a book about using music as magic. i really love these unique methods of accessing magic (see, the book of tea, where the art of magic is in the brewing of tea). it’s a lot more fascinating when there’s a conduit for magic.
the world building was out of this world. normally being in an urban setting results in less world building than a fantasy book, but i found this savage song really delved deep into the intricate goings-on in this world. it felt believable and compelling.
schwab did an excellent job crafting this book. the pacing was perfect. it slowed down in the right places, but not too slow. and sped back up as the action increased. i was hooked from page one. the writing style made it so easy to read.
the characters were easily my favourite part of this book. our two mc’s, kate and august, are both loveable and relatable. their romance isn’t too overbearing (unlike many other ya books). i enjoyed watching their friendship grow.
i ony have three issues with this book. the first: i regret that i didn’t pick this book up sooner. the second: our dark duet (the sequel/conclusion) doesn’t come out in the collectors edition for a while. and the third: i wish i could’ve rated this book higher.
having never read a book by schwab before this one, i can easily confirm that she’s my new favourite author. she managed to pull me out of a slump twice (thanks to addie la rue, that i read two weeks later). if anyone needs any confirmation on whether or not they should read this book: 1000%, yes!! do it now!

I loved this duology so much. The second book was my favorite of the two even though they were both great. I’m glad you enjoyed it!!
i hope to read it soon! i’m not sure if i’ll wait for the release of the matching collectors edition or just borrow it from the library while i wait.
