unfortunately, i didn’t like the city of brass as much as i’d hoped. i really liked the general ideas of this book, and the setting was amazing too.

i had a love/hate relationship with the world building in this book. i loved how different the setting was. this isn’t your typical western based fantasy world. it was so refreshing. however, i really disliked how s.a. chakraborty went over the top with everything. like, yes, i get it, can we move on now? it felt like a lot of fluff/filler content to meet a word count or something. if i wanted a bunch of world building that wasn’t relevant to the story i’d go read some adult fantasy.

i quite enjoyed the use of djinn. i don’t think i’ve ever read a book that features them. i would’ve loved some more description regarding what they are and their backstory (rather than the paragraphs of scenic filler).

i also really liked nahri. i found her unique but also likeable. like the setting, i found nahri to be refreshing in comparison to other ya heroines.

although i didn’t enjoy this book as much as i’d’ve liked, i still recommend giving it a go. i’ve read many reviews by people raving about the city of brass.

now that it’s finished, i’m more likely to read them. i won’t be reading it anytime soon as i’m fully booked (lol), but when i catch up, i’ll consider it.
